Consuming Lentils And Grains May Increase Life Expectancy By 8 To 13 Years: Study


We often hear that the right kind of food can affect your health. Eating nutritious and healthy food can go a long way in maintaining a healthy body and mind. Experts and nutritionists strongly advise diet control to manage a wide range of health problems and lifestyle diseases. And now, research supports this claim! A recently published study shows that a healthy diet has a significant effect on a person’s longevity. According to research, taking a healthy diet can increase life expectancy by up to 13 years!

The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Bergen in Norway and was published in the journal PLoS Medicine. The idea behind the study was to find out what kind of food we should eat and how it could affect our lives. This data will then help policymakers, clinical staff and experts formulate their dietary recommendations and make informed choices. “Food is fundamental to health, and the causes of global dietary risk are estimated at 11 million deaths a year and 255 million years of disability-compatible life years.”

Researchers have used data and analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study (2019). They tracked changes in lifespan of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, refined grains, nuts, lemons, fish, eggs, milk / milk, red meat, processed meats, and sugary-sweet drinks.

The study compared three types of diets – the first was an optimal diet that consisted of whole grains, lemons, fish, fruits, vegetables, and included red and processed meats, sugar reduction as well as a handful of nuts – sweet drinks, and Refined grains. A Western diet consisted of processed meats, refined grains, and sugary drinks. The third diet, i.e., the probability method diet was a midpoint between an optimal and a typical Western diet.

Whole foods can prolong life up to 13 years.

The results of the study indicate that a permanent change in the Western-optimized diet from the age of 20 would increase life expectancy in the United States by 10.7 years for women and 13 years for men. Eating more lemons, whole grains and nuts and less red meat and processed meats will have this effect on their health. Even at the age of 60, this change would mean an extended life span of 8 years for women and 8.8 years for men!

So, it is a good idea to consult a qualified dietitian or bring these dietary changes for a long and healthy life!
