Tea is probably one of the most popular everyday drinks after water. Many of us can’t start our day without it and need it more than once a day on the go. May 21st, every year this essential drink is dedicated to the celebration. International Tea Day was conceived on December 21, 2019, and is being led and observed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The goal of this event is to spread awareness about the importance of tea in our lives and to take steps to sustain its production.

Recently, the Tea Council of the United States hosted the Sixth International Symposium on Tea and Human Health, highlighting the benefits of eating green tea to boost immunity.

The symposium was led by Diang Wu, MD, PhD, associate director of the Nutritional Immunology Laboratory at the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, and associate director of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. Dayong Wu noted, “Green tea can help boost your immune system and boost your body’s immune system, among other health benefits.”

The following are some of the benefits of green tea:

1. Green tea contains catechins / polyphenols which fight against pathogen infections and maintain immune homeostasis.

2. Green tea can help prevent and reduce cell-mediated autoimmune diseases.

3. Green tea fights germs and reduces their effects and also helps the host’s immunity.

4. It promotes self-tolerance, suppresses autoantigen-induced inflammatory attacks, and can alleviate autoimmune disorders by increasing tissue repair.

5. Studies have also shown that green tea can help fight respiratory diseases like influenza by producing antibodies in the body.

Dayong Wu concludes that more research is needed to support the above findings.
