It started as a community midnight dinner in 1948 and it didn’t even end.
Fast forward to the 70-plus years, and the Met Gala is something completely different, one of the most photographed events in the world for its spinning red carpet – although the famous carpeted steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art are not always red. We are talking about Rihanna as the Buzzed Pope. Zendaya as Cinderella with a light-up gown. Katy Perry is transforming a hamburger into a chandelier Also: Beyonc তার in her “nude outfit”. Kim Kardashian in face covered bodysuit. Billy Porter, as an Egyptian sun god, carries a litter by six naked men. And Lady Gaga’s 16-minute striptease.
Not to be outdone, the Met Gala is still a fundraiser – the Mets Costume Institute grossed over .4 16.4 million last evening. Let’s not forget that it launches the annual Spring Fashion Show which brings thousands of visitors to the museum.
But it is the mat gala carpet itself (now livable for everyone to watch on the world) that draws the world’s attention, with the guest list strategically stuck until the last minute – a collection of celebrities from movies, music, fashion, sports, politics and elsewhere. Probably the highest celebrity wattage per square foot of any team in the world.
In addition, a primer for the 2022 Met Gala, which May 2:
Yeah Al that sounds pretty crap to me, Looks like BT aint for me either. The annual fundraising for the Mets Costume Institute is traditionally held on the first Monday in May, but a postponed gala is held in September due to the epidemic.
Who is hosting the 2022 Met Gala
This year’s organizers are Regina King, energy couple Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds and Lynn-Manuel Miranda. Among the organizers of the September slate were Timothy Chalamet, Billy Hilsa, Amanda Gorman and Naomi Osaka.
Of course, Vogue’s Anna Wintu is overseeing the whole of Shebang as she has been since the 90’s. His fellow honorary co-chairs are designer Tom Ford and Instagram chief Adam Moseri.
Is there a theme for the Met Gala 2022?
Of course. The theme for this year’s Met Gala is “Gilded Glamor, White-tie,” the guests were told.
As usual, the sartorial theme comes from the Gala Launch exhibition: “In America: The Anthology of Fashion,” which is the second in two parts of Star Curator Andrew Bolton’s exploration of American-style roots.
It will feature some lesser-known designers and some of the top film directors, including Sophia Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Host King and last year’s Oscar winner Chloe Zhao. Their work will be featured in the American Wing’s Period Room, so expect some great fashion, like gowns from HBO’s “The Gilded Age”. Artistically ripped jeans, this time? Not too much.
Does everyone follow the Met Gala theme?
Not really. Some avoid it and just go for the big and crazy. But hopefully some guests have researched the theme carefully and come to the perfect sync with the exhibition. It was hard to lose the carpet, for example, when the theme was “Catholic fantasy” and Rihanna came in as pope, Zendaya led the Joan of Arc, and Perry navigated the crowd with the wings of the giant angel.
How much do I have to pay for a Met Gala ticket?
Wrong question. You can’t just “buy” a ticket. The right question is, if I become famous or strong and get invited, how much will it cost?
If I were invited to the Met Gala, how much would it cost?
Well, you may not pay yourself. Usually, companies buy tables. A fashion label – Michael Kors, for example – will then host his favorite celebrity or fashion muse. But each paid seat costs around USD 35,000 (Rs 26.78 lakh) although some guests are invited for free.
So who was invited to the Met Gala?
This year, there will be 400 guests – just like the September event, and the pre-epidemic height is less than 500-600. Trying to predict? Take out your pen and write some A-listers, the better the buzz.
New Minted Oscar or Grammy winners, for example – or fashion favorites like Chalmette, who wore white Converse shoes last year. Do the same with pop music, sports, politics, fashion অবশ্যই and Broadway, Winter’s special favorite (and remember, Miranda hosts this year). Now, get everyone off your list without the top.
At the Met Gala, everyone’s A-list.
That would be an exaggeration.
Not really. Ask Tina. He went in 2010 and later described trying to find someone “normal”, such as not very famous, to sit and talk. Finally Barbara Walters.
How do I get involved in the Met Gala?
Okay, nowadays you can see the whole carpet unveiled in the livestream. And really, the carpet is the party. (Ask Gaga!)
If you’re in New York City, you can join fans across the street from the museum on Fifth Avenue and further away on Madison Avenue, pressing against the police barricade. You might be lucky: Last year, Chalamet ran to greet his fans.
Do we know who is coming? Who else?
As we have said, it is a secret. But reports from People say that’s just what’s happening. Fashion lover Zendaya has confirmed that she has other plans. And Rihanna is about to give birth, so we assumed she would avoid, but then again, she’s Rihanna so let’s not hold anything.
What happens inside the Met Gala?
Upon entering the museum, guests head to the lobby for an impossibly large floral arrangement (there were over 250,000 white roses) and a cocktail, often held at the aerial Petri Court. Or, they head to see the exhibition.
Around 8pm, they are called for dinner – probably by a group of buggers (“Are they going to do this in each course?” Actor Gary Oldman asked loudly for a year.) Or a musical performance, but you can find clips of Rihanna singing at the top of the table in the documentary “The First Monday May in May” and it looks fun.
Is it fun for everyone?
Sometimes no one says. Faye, in a comic rental to David Letterman in 2015, described the gala as a “shaking parade” and said it included everyone you ever wanted to punch, if you had millions of weapons.
Amy Schumer said she felt awkward and left “before she should be allowed”. But most claim to have fun.
Then there was Joan Collins, who came to channel her dynasty character, Alexis, in 2018, ready for an explosion, but looking for fluid sustenance. “I’m having a great time,” he told the Associated Press. “I wish I had a drink.”
